Centers Health Care is Stronger Together

This summer Centers Health Care is Stronger Together

A reflection of our unity, our strength and our ties to the communities we serve.

We are committed to providing an empowering circle of care. Top healthcare professionals in every field play a critical role in our mission to deliver a patient-centered life cycle that makes us all stronger. Our leadership, experience and expertise in post-acute healthcare all lead to successful outcomes.

Danny Prero, Administrator at Williamsbridge Center, describes how he experiences the circle at his facility: “I’m a firm believer in working hard, working together, and paying it forward. My mission is to guide my team toward a common goal and outcome—improving the lives of all those who come through our doors in need of our care. I inspire my team to achieve success, and they inspire me by their great work.”

This summer, as you get to know why we are stronger together, you will also have the opportunity to learn something…and win something, including a Roku TV, a trip for 2, and more. All you have to do is learn the facts: Did you know that Centers Health Care partners with over 2,000 hospitals and health providers, that the average therapy department at Centers has over 140 years of combined experience, and each year we achieve over 22,000 successful rehabilitation stays? There is real strength—and some pretty cool prizes—in those numbers!

We are also recognizing our healthcare hero partners at regional hospitals, serving up complimentary ice cream or donuts to the staff at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, and NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn to name just a few. Watch our donut extravaganza in action, courtesy of Centers Health Care.

The bottom line is: Centers Health Care is making a difference in people’s lives.

These are just three of the many examples from around Centers Health Care that remind us of the wonderful stories we can share because we are stronger together.

Last, but certainly not least, the campaign highlights inspiring true stories of patients and residents who have benefitted from the Centers Circle of Care, demonstrating the real-life power and success of the Stronger Together promise.

Beth Abraham Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing With 5 Organizational Hacks to Save Time and Money

Some people may have done every project around the house possible while stay-at-home orders were in place, but for the rest of us, we might need some additional motivation. Saving time and money while organizing and doing other projects is always a great motivator, so this blog is just for you!

Beth Abraham Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing is sharing five organizational hacks to make your life easier.

If you’ve ever had a large delivery, you might have a wooden pallet lying around. If not, go to a home improvement or gardening store, and you’ll likely get one for free. Then attach it to a fence, shed, or the exposed studs in your garage, and you have a perfect holding area for rakes, shovels, etc.

Sick of ruining clothes by accidentally tossing them in the dryer? Solve this problem by leaving a note for yourself on the washer or dryer! Most of these surfaces are finished similar to dry-erase boards, so leave a note for yourself or whoever might be tossing clothes into the dryer on what can and can’t go in.

Lazy Susans in the kitchen cabinets went out of style, but it can make a comeback in your fridge! If you have the problem of constantly having to rearrange items to reach things in the back of the refrigerator, put a Lazy Susan in there and easily revolve items from the back to the front.

If supplies under the kitchen cabinet are getting lost, knocked over, or spilling, consider putting a tension rod from one end to the other, then hang the nozzles on the rod. This gives you easy access to the cleaning items and ensures that they won’t gunk up the surface inside the cabinet.

Here’s a handy grab-and-go cord rack that you can make in just an hour; it will allow you to keep extension cords, power-tool cords, and more organized and easily accessible.

Beth Abraham Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing on 5 Surprising Effects Coffee Has on the Body

Around 62 percent of Americans drink a cup of coffee every day, while 11 percent admitting to downing four cups or more daily. Overall, the average American drinks three cups daily. That’s some serious java!

While several studies have linked coffee drinking with several general health benefits, Beth Abraham Center would like to bring five effects – some positive, some negative – that you may not be as familiar with to your attention.

You are probably aware that coffee is acidic and raising the level of acidity in your stomach can make heartburn worse. This usually only occurs if you drink too much coffee on an empty stomach, since increased acid levels help with the digestion of food.

Drinking too much coffee is associated with getting the jitters – including an increased heart rate and perhaps symptoms of anxiety. Studies show, however, that coffee helps the body release dopamine, which is a happy hormone. Also, one cup of coffee is shown to drop heart rate, but it will rise from each successive cup.

If you’re having trouble focusing at work, the stimulating effects of coffee begin at about the 20-minute mark after drinking a cup. Your alertness will improve, and you will have better concentration.

Coffee has been found to promote the release of gastrin, which can speed things up in the colon. If you’re a little backed up, an extra cup of coffee or two may do the trick.

Save those used grounds and bring them in the shower! This article says that coffee grounds are great to exfoliate! They can stimulate blood flow, tighten the skin, and even minimize the appearance of cellulite!

Extraordinary Individuals: #CentersHeroes

A message from CEO, Kenny Rozenberg, to #CentersHeroes:

Our thanks—and our hearts—go out to you.

I’ve never been more proud of—or awed by—the Centers Health Care teams across our network and throughout our facilities. At this critical time, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, all of you—administrators, therapists, nurses and nurses aides, social workers, hospital liaisons, receptionists, recreational, food and cleaning staffs—have stood up and met the challenge head on. You are the best. You are the bravest. You are Centers Heroes!

 Watch our #CentersHeroes in action.

Every day, without fail, you demonstrate the courage to step up—and the commitment to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our patients, residents and your co-workers. The world is changing. You are not…because I’ve seen it with my own eyes: you have always been steadfast in your dedication and courage.

I want to highlight a #CentersHero, Shellan Robinson, LPN at Ellicott Center. “I love what I do. I can’t think of anything more rewarding than being a nurse: taking care of people in need, easing their pain, comforting and engaging them. In the last several months, with the arrival of COVID-19, we have experienced dramatic new challenges in our work. But one thing remains the same: I still love what I do.” Click here to read more

Shellan’s story is just one of many—stories of the unsung heroes throughout Centers Health Care. We honor you. We salute you. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You are our heroes.

Our partners at the Buffalo Sabres also recognize and salute our #CentersHeroes. Goaltender Carter Hutton, sends a shoutout to you all:

On behalf of the Sabres, I want to say thank you to our friends at Centers Health Care. You show up every single day to help prevent Covid-19. Your support is great for the community. Thanks for keeping us safe.”

Watch the full video of Carter here

I know this is not easy—for you or your families. The pandemic may in fact be the greatest challenge you ever face. But you have proven by your every day actions—by your commitment and your compassion—that you are up to the challenge.

I want to join the Sabres in thanking every #CentersHero…as well as all healthcare workers and first responders on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beth Abraham Center Explains the Best Footwear for Elderly Care Patients

One of the major changes that comes with aging is that we need to be a little more selective about what we wear. A long-term care situation like that at Beth Abraham Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing comes with a number of circumstances that dictate the best qualities for clothing and for our shoes. The activities and environment of a long-term care facility can differ from those experienced when living alone, so the way we consider shoes may need to differ a little as well. Below are some qualities to look for inappropriate long-term facility footwear.

First and foremost, the footwear should be comfortable. Many patients are not going to be spending long periods of time on their feet involved in strenuous physical activity, so comfort takes precedence over performance. They should be made of a material that is stretchable and that breathes well. It is also important that they don’t rub in sensitive contact points. They should be easy to remove and to put on, but you don’t want a sloppy fit that allows the shoes to shift easily out of the proper position.

Structurally, a good pair of senior living shoes offers firm support and non-slip soles. Stability is a major factor for the elderly, and the right pair of shoes can make a big difference in this area. Falls are, of course, one of the leading causes of injury among the elderly, so improving traction and balance is of paramount concern.

Finally, there may be some additional considerations. Machine washable shoes help to maintain the cleanliness that’s so important in long-term care facilities. If your loved one wears or may soon wear orthotic inserts, they’ll obviously need shoes that can easily accommodate those. Finally, pick a pair of shoes that the senior patient is going to like and is going to be willing to wear. The best pair of shoes in the world won’t do them any good sitting in a closet.
